Surviving the Demographic Tidal Wave
Food industry consultant Michael Sansolo presented yesterday afternoon’s Super Session, focusing on the new generation of potential employees and customers and differences in lifestyles, outlook, and values.
He pointed out that many of today’s executives and managers are Baby Boomers, whose perspectives are dramatically different from the emerging Generation Y, presenting significant challenges in understanding and communication, and in attracting talented new employees who may look and act differently from what executives over age 40 may consider the norm.
There is a coming crisis, Sansolo said, noting that in the decade ahead when Baby Boomers “get out of the way,” there may not be enough younger, talented people ready to move in to lead companies and industries into the future. He urged convenience executives today to recognize that concern and to develop new approaches designed to attract younger people into their organizations.
Sansolo pointed out that with today’s high unemployment rates, there are many talented young people looking for work, so now would be a great time to begin scouting and attracting potential leaders for the future.
